After last month’s windfall of paperbacks, we weren’t really chomping at the bits for more. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not possible to be completely smelly old book satiated but it wasn’t an overwhelming itch. For most of the month we laid low but came around toward the end for a quick trip to Columbus to hit up Karen Wickliff Books.
Upon walking in Karen says hello and asks us what we are looking for. I tell her old paperbacks and to my dismay she says, “there is a guy who has been coming in here and buying a ton of them lately…” Oof! Not what I wanted to hear. It’s ok though, it’s a jam-packed store and I was sure there was plenty to be had.
We’ll start off with the strongest cover art. I picked up these two McFadden Books Margery Allingham. They look to be horror but I believe they are mystery. Either way, cool find.
Finally found some Westlake Parker series. These get mentioned a lot on Paperback Warrior and I’ve been wanting to check them out. Also, I love this era of Avon crime book cover art. I have a bunch of Lawrence Blocks from the same era that are beautiful.
Grabbed the third and final installment in the Centaur Books Solomon Kane series and The Goblin Tower by L Sprague de Camp. I just realized it’s the same cover artist, Jeff Jones. A happy accident as Bob Ross would say.
Got some Panther sci-fi adventure with The Unholy City and some Irish mythology fantasy in Land of Unreason.
Disaster sci-fi in The Second Atlantis about California falling in the ocean. Reprisal is about a black man getting revenge on the white guys who lynched his wife. I looked this one up to see if it was a black author but no, it’s a Southern white guy, who after reading about a similar true incident of the murder of a woman, was so appalled and disgusted that he wrote this revenge story. Heavy stuff. Definitely will have to be in the right mood for that read.
On a lighter note, here is some scantily clad woman knife fighting. Dungeons of Kuba by Graham Diamond. I’m currently reading a book by him called Marrakesh. It’s a sort of Arabian Nights type deal. Kuba has some cool line work illustrations that were a bonus selling point. The Frisco Lady is a spy type novel which looks to be set in early 1900’s San Francisco, Chinatown.
Keeping with my basball centered plots I've been so fond of lately, I found this Murder at Fenway Park. I’m assuming with the old-timey uniforms on the cover it takes place in the early 20th century. And hey, how about some Ninja? White ninja at that. I love the sometimes inappropriate but fun cultural crossover.
Some Men’s Adventure here with a Donald Hamilton Matt Helm series and Toma- The Airport Affair by…David Toma. I’m assuming a pseudonym unless David Toma really loves himself.
Hammond Innes disaster adventure with The Angy Mountain and some Monarch Books disaster with the Unending Night.
Yellow box Pan detective mystery and a Pan McBain 87th Precinct entry with a semi-reflective cover. Very cool.
Picked up this Man with Three Jaguars cause it looked tough and I thought it was interesting the detective was of Hispanic descent. Assault on Ming is by actor turned writer, Alan Caillou and is a spy adventure with the word “oriental” on the cover which is an immediate buy for me.
70’s hardcore bondage porno?? Nope, it’s a spy book! What an…uh…interesting choice for cover art. Atlan is a sci-fi/fantasy psychedelic novel of, “a young girl’s adventure in a fantastic world of lust and violence.”
Pretty good finds even with a fellow collector pillaging the shop. It pays to dig! Up next is two books from a store called Game Swap who sells “retro”, DVD’s, games, magazines, records etc. They have a very tiny book section but every time I go in there it has different stuff so either people are selling their books there consistently or they have a bunch in the back room and every time I buy some they bring more out. Nothing amazing but I did get two more 90’s serial killer thrillers that I love so much. Each .50 so you can’t go wrong there.
And that’s it. I’ve started making YouTube videos for every post so please check that out and subscribe there for new videos.
